We’re not talking Nintendo’s ‘Duck Hunt’ – we’re talking World Superbike Championship Duck hunting!
In fact, the Honda RC51 was dubbed the “Designated Duck killer” by Cycle World when it was first released in the year 2000. So how exactly did the Honda RC51 come to be?
The very first World Superbike Championship (also referred to as the WSBK, World SBK, or SBK) took place in 1988, and Honda won both the inaugural title and again the following year in 1989 with their 750cc V-4 sport bike, the RC30 (also known as the Honda VFR750R).
In the decade that followed, Ducati motorcycles won the title 8 out of the 10 years, with winning streaks from ’90-’92, ’94-’96, and ’98-’99. Kawasaki claimed the ’93 title and Honda claimed its third title in ’97 with the RC45 (also referred to as the RVF750R). The RC45 was a step up from the RC30 because it utilized electronic fuel injection.
Honda was done playing bridesmaid to Ducati’s V-twin bikes in the WSBK. With the new millenium came Honda’s very own Vtwin superbike, the RC51 (also known as the RVT1000R, VTR1000SP1, or VTR1000SP2). Honda produced the RC51 from 2000 through 2006.
The RC51 won two World Superbike Championships, in 2000 and 2002, under Colin Edwards. It also won the 2002 AMA Championship with Nicky Hayden. It’s safe to say the Honda RC51’s racing pedigree speaks for itself.
Not only is the Honda RC51 a known Ducati killer, but it is also unquestionably the superior V-twin when compared to the Suzuki TL1000 TL1000R.
